As we age, our collagen naturally degrades: quantitative and structural changes in collagen fibres are a major factor of aged skin. Our skin’s ability to replenish collagen naturally decreases by about one per cent to one and a half per cent per year.This collagen dip is one of the hallmarks associated with the onset of fine lines and wrinkles, and loss of firmness and elasticity.
Two families of enzymes are responsible for degrading collagen: Matrix Metallo Proteases and Serine Proteases. Their activity is regulated by endogenous modulators, including Tissue Inhibitors of Metallo Proteinase and Serpins (Serine Protease Inhibitors).
Type 1 collagen is by far the most abundant protein in human skin, comprising greater than 90 per cent of its dry weight. The unique physical properties of collagen fibers give the skin its structural integrity.
