Skin ageing is a complex biological process that is influenced by a combination of chronological ageing and exogenous factors such as sun exposure, lifestyle and pollution.

As we age, our collagen naturally degrades: quantitative and structural changes in collagen fibres are a major factor of aged skin. Our skin’s ability to replenish collagen naturally decreases by about one per cent to one and a half per cent per year.This collagen dip is one of the hallmarks associated with the onset of fine lines and wrinkles, and loss of firmness and elasticity.

Two families of enzymes are responsible for degrading collagen: Matrix Metallo Proteases and Serine Proteases. Their activity is regulated by endogenous modulators, including Tissue Inhibitors of Metallo Proteinase and Serpins (Serine Protease Inhibitors).

Type 1 collagen is by far the most abundant protein in human skin, comprising greater than 90 per cent of its dry weight. The unique physical properties of collagen fibers give the skin its structural integrity. While many anti-ageing strategies focus on stimulating collagen production, acting against collagen degradation represents an innovative option to slow down the ageing process.

Enter Definisse KP1 Collagen Modulator, which contains exclusive bio-active peptide KP1 (Key Peptide One), derived from the Serine Protease Inhibitor Serpin A1.
