Everything you need to know about NeoGen Plasma

As the facelift has seen a resurgence, the demand for non-surgical options has also risen, and one device in particular has truly risen to the occasion. The NeoGen Plasma is a no-knife youth-boosting treatment that turbo-charges collagen and elastin production in the face, neck as well as the body.

We asked some of the UK’s leading experts to share how this treatment works and how it compares to other non-surgical skin tightening devices on the market.

What's the science behind NeoGen Plasma? 

The answer is in the name—the treatment runs on nitrogen gas which it transforms into nitrogen plasma energy. “The energy is unleashed through a specially designed hand piece, and rapidly elevates the temperature of the skin’s underlying layer, known as the dermis," shares Dr Sara Rakhshani-Moghadam, Founder, Dr Rasha Clinic London.

"This controlled heating triggers minor damage, setting the body’s natural healing mechanism into action. The result is the generation of fresh, healthy collagen and elastin, leading to immediate skin tightening and the gradual development of firmer skin.”
 
It only takes a few days post-treatment for the skin to start shedding the damaged outermost layer, “to reveal a rejuvenated upper layer of skin that is more even in tone texture and firmness,” adds Rakhshani-Moghadam.
 

What can NeoGen Plasma treat? 

Far from a one hit wonder, this innovative device treats a whole host of concerns. “It has a remarkable ability to stimulate collagen production without the need for needles, to effectively treat deep wrinkles and lines, the upper and lower eyelids, skin pigmentation, skin laxity and loose skin, acne scars and rough texture, as well as sun damage,” shares Rakhshani-Moghadam.

Research has shown that NeoGen treatments can stimulate robust fibroblast (these cells make secrete collagen) regeneration for up to two years post-treatment. So, after a course of multiple treatments, sagging, wrinkles, pigmentation, scarring and fine lines can be massively improved and the results keep getting better over time, all sans scalpel.
 

Is NeoGen Plasma suitable for all skin types and tones?

Many of the most effective anti-ageing treatments cause controlled damage in order to trigger healing, and this often means that they are not always suitable for all skin tones—namely Black and brown skin as they are more susceptible to hyperpigmentation.

"NeoGen Plasma is suitable for all skin types and tones as it’s possible to tailor treatments to each client’s individual needs, which is another reason why it’s one of my favourite treatments,” says Rakhshani-Moghadam. "However, I would always recommend the lowest energy setting for my patients with darker skin tones, as higher energy settings may trigger pigmentation.”
 

How many treatments are needed?

Unlike an ultrasound treatment or radio frequency microneedling devices, this isn’t a one and done option. Depending on your concerns, anywhere from three to six sessions will be required, spaced four to six weeks apart.

“It also requires approximately 10 days of downtime after each session, including significant peeling for several days,” shares Sophie Shotter, Aesthetic Doctor and Host of the Age Well with Dr Sophie Shotter podcast.

What to expect

Depending on the energy level of your treatment, you may or may not require numbing cream to take the edge off. On a low-energy setting which will feel warm on the skin, it’s unlikely that your therapist will apply numbing cream, however, higher energy sessions can be more painful and most practitioners will numb the skin before they begin.

Skin tends to go pink on fair skin tones and darker on deep skin tones, and depending on the energy level you may also experience skin peeling post procedure, with anywhere between five to ten days of downtime—which of course also depends on how comfortable you feel being seen if skin is peeling, is a slightly different hue than normal, and if you’re sporting a thick layer of petroleum jelly or recovery cream to help stop skin from drying out and speeding up your recovery time.

Conclusion

With results that rival a nip and tuck, or at the very least muscle relaxing injections and dermal fillers, it’s little wonder that NeoGen Plasma has become a firm favourite amongst aesthetic doctors and practitioners. However, it’s definitely a treatment that takes commitment and is not for the faint hearted. It also costs around £800 for one face, neck and eye session, meaning it’s on the higher end of the price spectrum.
